New Marine Protected Area in the Pitcairn Islands

We’d like to congratulate the UK today as they announced the creation of a new Marine Protected Area in the Pitcairn Islands! This new designation will protect the marine ecosystem around Pitcairn from illegal fishing and destruction of habitat.

The Pitcairn Islands are made up of four islands and are the last territory in the Pacific that belongs to the UK. And here’s a fun fact: The population contains the descendants of the crew from the HMAV Bounty.

The MPA around Pitcairn will cover several hundred miles of ocean and ensure that the rich diversity of organisms continues to thrive. It will also increase opportunities for tourism and scientific research.
